About us
The Department of Biomedical Physics was established in 2021 on the foundations of the Department of Macromolecular Physics after expanding the research topics to include issues at the intersection of biophysics and medicine.
The research team consists of scientists representing various disciplines: Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Medicine.
The research topics of the Biomedical Physics Department are very broad and include, among others:
- Molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases
- Non-viral vectors for gene therpy
- Prognostic parameters in PET imaging
- Chemical compounds that increase cell sensitivity to radiotherapy
- Physical and IT aspects of cancer diagnosis and radiotherapy planning
- Structure and molecular dynamics of soft matter systems (oligomeric surfactants, drug carriers, lipids)
- Technical aspects of MRI imaging and X-ray diagnostics
- Molecular dynamics of ligands, molecular dynamics of liquids in confined volumes, properties of porous materials
- Properties of ionic liquids
- Nanoparticles – synthesis, physical properties, cytotoxicity
History
The Department of Biomedical Physics originates from the Department of Macromolecular Physics founded by Professor Stefan Jurga. After his retirement in 2016, Professor Maciej Kozak became the head of the Department. Although the main research topics of the Department of Macromolecular Physics are still being continued, the new interdisciplinary team built by the current leader has become involved in topics from the border of physics, biology, chemistry and medicine. New experimental techniques have also been introduced. The name change, finally introduced in 2021, to the Department of Biomedical Physics, best reflects the current research profile of our team.
We are grateful to our predecessors for creating a solid foundation and we are moving forward
